Oakley, Young Help Women's Hockey Rebound For Shutout Win
January 12, 2008 | Women's Ice Hockey
The Princeton women's hockey team will have enough on its mind this week with finals. The Tigers didn't need any lingering bad feelings from the weekend, and they showed it in a spirited 2-0 win over Brown Saturday at Baker Rink. Senior Marykate Oakley scored the winning goal in the third period, while junior goaltender Kristen Young made 19 saves, including several tough late ones, to earn a shutout.
Princeton improved to 8-8-4, 6-6-1 in the ECAC with the win, while Brown fell to 2-12-3, 2-8-2. The Tigers, coming off a disappointing 5-3 loss to Yale Friday night, were the aggressors throughout the game. They outshot Brown 41-17 and had at least a seven-shot advantage in each period.
For the first two periods, the only thing building on the scoresheet was penalties. There were 11 calls, including eight in the second period, but both teams killed off penalties valiantly through the first 40 minutes. Brown was aided by a strong edge in faceoffs and timely saves from Nicole Stock, but Princeton was relentless.
The Tigers were finally rewarded on their first power-play opportunity of the third period. An interference call against Erica Kromm gave Princeton the advantage, and it would take the Orange and Black less than 30 seconds to capitalize. A slapshot from Maddie Endicott was saved by Stock, who deflected the puck to her right. That was where Oakley stood alone, and she easily stuffed it in for the game winner. It was Oakley's seventh goal of the season, and it came 6:54 into the final period.
The Bears, who were on the defensive for most of the first 55 minutes, finally got their offense going late. Three strong scoring opportunities, including two on the doorstep in the final two minutes, were knocked away by Young. Rylee Olewinski had the final one while skating without a goalie; Brown got control behind the Princeton net and sent it past Young's right skate, but she got down and shut off any opportunity Olewinski would have for a goal. It would be the final chance, as Katherine Dineen, fresh off Friday's hat trick, got control in the final seconds and sent a lead pass to Lizzie Keady, who fired into the open net with two seconds remaining in the game. It was Keady's fifth goal of the season and clinched a much-needed win for the Tigers, who will be battling for home ice in the ECAC quarterfinals in the coming weeks.
Princeton will resume play Jan. 29 at Quinnipiac and will return to Baker Rink for a weekend series on Feb. 1-2, when it will host Rensselear and Union.
