Tiger Men's Track Wins Four Events At Penn State Relays
January 12, 2008 | Men's Track and Field
The Tiger men's track team had some solid performances heading into Princeton's exam break as four athletes won events at the annual Penn State Relays at the Nittany Lions' Horace Ashenfelter Track Saturday afternoon.
Included in those victories were a pair of athletes who provisionally qualified for March's NCAA championship meet. Sophomores Justin Frick and Ian Fox both cleared 2.14 meters (7 feet, 1/4 inch) in the high jump, a meet record in addition to the provisional qualifying mark.
Princeton also won a pair of events on the track. Senior Kurt Kuehne continued a strong indoor season in the middle distances by winning the 1,000 meters in a time of 2:25.37, nearly two seconds better than the next collegiate runner. Meanwhile, sophomore Ben White won the mile. His time of 4:15.51 edged out the second-place time by just .03 second for the eight laps.
Junior Alex Pessala had yet another victory in the weight throw Saturday with a toss of 63 feet, two inches, just off the NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
The Tigers also had a strong fourth-place finish out of 14 teams in a close mile relay Saturday. Shafiq Kashmiri, Mike Eddy, Matt Brock and Ian Thomson finished that event in 3:15.73. The winning time was 3:14.08.
In the sprints, sophomore Andrew Usoro was third in the 300 meters in 34.60 seconds and fourth in the 55 meters in a time of 6.50 seconds.
Princeton's distance medley relay group of Rob Grote, Tom Zozokos, Jordan Sawadogo and Bryan Sharkey was fourth out of nine teams in that event with a time of 10:11.13.
The Tigers will host the Princeton Relays at Jadwin Gym in two weeks
