Volleyball Sweeps Cornell, Will Face Yale For First Place Friday Night
October 11, 2008 | Women's Volleyball
The Princeton women's volleyball team ran its Ivy League win streak to 17 matches by pulling off a 3-0 win at the site of its last loss, Newman Arena at Cornell. Three Tiger women recorded 10 kills and senior Bailey Robinson added 40 assists, as Princeton overcame a tough second set to move to 3-0 in league play.
Princeton improved to 9-2 overall with the 25-15, 27-25, 25-18 win over Cornell, which fell to 4-9 overall, 3-1 in the league. Cornell came into the day in a three-way tie for first in the Ivy League with Yale and Harvard; Yale ended it alone in first after a 3-2 win over the Crimson in New Haven. Yale holds a half game lead over the Tigers, but only one team will remain unbeaten in league play after this Friday, when Princeton travels to face Yale at 7 p.m.
It was another strong night for the Princeton middles, as both Lindsey Ensign and Cathryn Quinn combined for 20 kills and only one error in Saturday's victory. Ensign recorded 10 kills on 16 swings without an error and added three blocks, while Quinn had 10 kills, also on 16 swings, and had four blocks. For the weekend, including Friday night's win at Columbia, the Ensign-Quinn combination recorded 39 kills and two errors.
Senior Parker Henritze recorded another double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs, while freshman libero Hillary Ford led Princeton with 17 digs. Senior setter Bailey Robinson recorded 40 assists, four digs, three kills and two blocks in the win as she continued her run at another All-Ivy season.
After a comfortable 25-15 win in the opener, Princeton nearly dropped its first set of the Ivy League season when Cornell led 20-16 in the middle stanza. Princeton won four straight points, including a Henritze kill and a Ford ace, but Cornell got back to a 24-23 lead and had a swing at the set. A hitting error gave the Tigers a second life, and they wouldn't be denied. Two kills by Quinn moved Princeton to a 26-25 lead, and a solo block by Kelli Grobe gave Princeton the win. An early 8-2 run in the third set sent Princeton to a comfortable win in the clincher.
