Princeton, Harvard to Meet Saturday in Ivy Women's Soccer First-Place Battle
October 24, 2008 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON ? Another week, another battle for first place in Ivy League women's soccer.
Last Saturday, the Tigers used an overtime goal to beat Columbia and take sole possession of first place in the league. This week, Princeton will return home to face Harvard, just one point behind in the league standings.
Princeton (9-1-2, 3-0-1 Ivy) vs. Harvard (8-3-3, 3-1-0)
Sat., Oct. 25, 7 p.m. at Roberts Stadium
Coaches: Princeton ? Julie Shackford (14th season/William & Mary '88)
Harvard ? Ray Leone (Second season/UNC Charlotte '85)
All-Time Series: Harvard leads 19-8-1
Streaks collide: Both Princeton and Harvard have gone a while without a loss. Princeton's unbeaten streak extends to 10 games, while the Crimson have won five straight, outscoring their opponents 15-3 during that stretch.
More recently: Though Harvard dominated the series with Princeton in the 1980s and 1990s, this decade has been much more back-and-forth for the two teams. In the last seven meetings from 2001 on, Princeton leads 4-2-1 with four of the seven games going to overtime.
Last time in Princeton: Vicki Anagnostopoulos had a day for the record book in her rookie season meeting against Harvard on Oct. 21, 2006. She scored four goals in the game's first 56 minutes as the Tigers beat Harvard 5-0 on Lourie-Love Field.
Last time against Harvard: Princeton traveled to Harvard last Oct. 20 with a 3-0 Ivy League record and looking to take control of the league race. The Crimson had other ideas, however, and Princeton, N.J. native Lizzy Nichols scored one minute into the game to give Harvard the lead. The Crimson ran up a 4-1 lead before Marissa Sampias scored with less than 30 minutes left, but the game ended with a 4-2 Harvard win.
Tiger team leaders: Senior Sarah Peteraf leads Princeton in eight goals, which also leads the league in goals per game at 0.67. At the other end, sophomore Alyssa Pont's goals-against average of 0.33 is a league best.
Clutch: Peteraf's six game-winning goals are an Ivy best, and the latest of her two golden goals kept Princeton in first in the Ivy League. Peteraf scored with three minutes left in the second overtime at Columbia, a day short of a month after beating Towson with an OT goal.
Giving nothing: Princeton's eight team shutouts lead the Ivy League, as do Alyssa Pont's seven solo blankings. Pont and freshman Kristin Watson split time against American in the other shutout.
Go Eagles: Princeton freshman Kalie Bartholomew and Harvard sophomore Kerry Kartsonis are both alumnae of Episcopal High in Jacksonville, Fla.
Looking ahead: Three of Princeton's last four games, counting the Harvard game, are at home. The Tigers will host their fourth Patriot League opponent of the season when they meet Bucknell next Wednesday before setting out on the road at Cornell next Saturday.
