Volleyball Sweeps Harvard In Home Debut, Stays Half Game Behind Yale
October 24, 2008 | Women's Volleyball
Freshmen Cathryn Quinn and Hillary Ford waited a month and a half to finally play in front of home fans, but they made the wait worthwhile. Quinn led Princeton with 14 kills while Ford had 11 assists, including a handful of crowd thrillers, to lead the reigning Ivy League champion Tigers to a hard-fought 3-0 sweep of the Harvard Crimson.
The win improves Princeton to 11-3, 5-1 in the Ivy League, while Harvard fell to 8-11, 3-4 in the Ivy League. Princeton trails Yale by one half game in the league standings following the Bulldogs' 3-0 win at Cornell.
Quinn recorded 14 kills on 22 swings, hit .500 for the match and recorded a block in Princeton's 28-26, 25-23, 25-21 over Harvard. The freshman middle helped Princeton hit .315 for the match, including .432 in an exciting first game that featured 20 ties and seven lead changes. The Crimson had three game points in the opener, but each time Princeton was able to side out, including once on a Quinn kill. At 26-26, Princeton got an attack error from Harvard and a service ace from Kelli Grobe to clinch a 28-26 victory.
There were 10 ties and five lead changes in the second game, but a Parker Henritze kill at 23-23 gave Princeton a game point. Anne Carroll Ingersoll followed with an attack error to give Princeton the second game, and the Tigers carried that momentum into the third, when they built a big lead midway through the game and held on for a 25-21 victory.
"We love playing at home," said setter Bailey Robinson, who led Princeton with 45 assists. "Playing five matches at home got our season off to such a great start last year, and this year we had to play five on the road. It was a little nerve-racking to finally play here, but we settled down. The freshmen bring a lot of fire to the lineup. Cathryn adds a lot of height and Hillary dug some balls I didn't expect."
Henritze and Sheena Donohue both recorded 13 kills and 14 digs for the Tigers, while Kelli Grobe added five kills. Robinson had eight digs and a pair of kills to go along with her 45 assists.
Princeton will take on Dartmouth Saturday at 4 p.m. The Big Green fell 3-0 at Penn Friday night.
