Volleyball Escapes Upset Effort With 8-0 Run, Knocks Off Dartmouth 3-1
October 25, 2008 | Women's Volleyball
Despite being four points away from a fifth set, the reigning Ivy League women's volleyball champion Princeton Tigers rallied for a 3-1 victory Saturday afternoon against a game Dartmouth team. Bailey Robinson served the Tigers to a late 8-0 run and recorded 52 assists to keep Princeton one half game out of first place in the Ivy League.
Ahead two sets to one, Princeton trailed Dartmouth 21-14 when a service error sent Robinson to the line needing to spark the home squad. A ball-handling error by Dartmouth got things going, and a kill by Sheena Donohue cut the deficit to 21-17. From there, freshman Cathryn Quinn capped a brilliant first weekend in Dillon Gym with back-to-back kills and, following a Donohue kill, an assisted block to get Princeton back even. Donohue gave Princeton a 22-21 lead, and while Dartmouth was able to get back into the scoring column, the Green could never put Princeton away at that point. A Big Green error ended a 25-21, 25-27, 25-15, 28-26 victory for the jubilant and relieved Tigers.
Senior Parker Henritze, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year, recorded 23 kils and 14 digs and hit .291 for the Tigers, while fellow outside hitter Donohue added 18 kills and 10 digs. Robinson had three kills and 15 digs to go along with her 52 assists, while senior middle Lindsey Ensign had 12 kills and five blocks for the Tigers. Freshman starters Quinn and Hillary Ford provided sparks for Princeton throughout the weekend; following strong performances Friday against Harvard, Quinn recorded 11 kills, one block and a .364 attack percentage while libero Hillary Ford had a match-high 22 digs, as well as an assist and a service ace for the Tigers.
The win moves Princeton to 12-3 overall and 6-1 in the Ivy League. The Tigers trail Yale, a 3-0 winner at Columbia Saturday, by half a game with three more full weekends of league play to go. Princeton will stay home next weekend to face Cornell and Columbia at Dillon Gym; GoPrincetonTigers.com will have a weekend preview later in the week.
