Boddie Breaks Out in Women's Soccer's 4-0 Win at Cornell
November 01, 2008 | Women's Soccer
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Alissa Boddie entered Saturday still looking for her first career points in her rookie season at Princeton. By the time Saturday's 4-0 win at Cornell ended, Boddie stood as the team's third-leading point scorer on the season.
Boddie scored Princeton's first three goals and assisted on Sarah Peteraf's 12th of the season as the Tigers improved to 11-2-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the Ivy League. With Harvard tying and Columbia winning, all three teams stand in a first-place tie atop the Ivy League. Before Princeton hosts Penn in next Saturday's season finale, Harvard will host Columbia.
"It's always nice to see someone unexpected have a breakout game," Princeton head coach Julie Shackford said. "It was another total team effort."
Boddie's first goal came in the 23rd minute when she banked a shot off the right post and in. She scored again 10 minutes into the second half, and before another 10 minutes were gone, Boddie intercepted a pass deep in Cornell's end and hammered it home for a 3-0 lead.
But the rookie had more to contribute, finding Peteraf for the senior's team-leading 12th goal of the season five minutes after Boddie completed the hat trick.
Princeton outshot Cornell 20-9 on the game and allowed the Big Red only one shot on goal. All three of Princeton's goalkeepers played, including sophomore Jillian Hewitt, who saw her first collegiate action when she closed out the last 2:32.
Next Saturday's doubleheader will begin with the men's team playing at 1 p.m. and the women looking for a share of the Ivy League title at 4. Whether Princeton will gain the Ivy's automatic berth to the NCAA tournament, and possibly the outright Ivy title, will depend on the outcome of the Harvard-Columbia game.
