Princeton Hosts NCAA Mid-Atlantic Cross Country Regional

PRINCETON, N.J. (11/14/08) ? Princeton University will host the 2008 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Cross Country Regional on Saturday, Nov. 15. The women's 6k race will begin at 11 a.m., and the men's 10k race will start at 12 p.m.

The following teams will be racing both its men and women's teams: Bucknell, Coppin State, Delaware, Delaware State, Duquesne, George Washington, Georgetown, Howard, La Salle, Lafayette, Lehigh, Longwood, Loyola, Marshall, Maryland, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Monmouth, Mt. St. Mary's, Navy, Penn, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rider, Robert Morris, Rutgers, Seton Hall, St. Francis (Pa.), St. Joseph's (Pa.), St. Peter's, Temple, Towson, UMBC, Villanova and West Virginia.
The Princeton women's team should be led by junior Liz Costello. Costello won the Ivy League Heptagonal for the second straight year and has been Princeton's top finisher all season. Senior Megan Brandeland and junior Reilly Kiernan have also been consistently at the top for the Tigers. This will be Kiernan's first regional, while Brandeland has experience, competing in the last two regionals for Princeton. Others that could compete include: senior Jolee VanLeuven, junior Alexa Glencer, sophomores Sarah Cummings, Liz Deir, Ashley Higginson, Brooke Russell, and freshman Alex Banfich.
Last year at regionals, Princeton finished first among 28 teams. Costello was the first Tiger across the line, and second overall, finishing in a time of 19:58. She was followed by Christy Johnson, in fifth place. Also scoring for the Tigers was Sarah Cummings, Brandeland and VanLeuven.
A total of five nationally-ranked squads, including Princeton at No. 4 will compete this weekend. Villanova (No. 5), West Virginia (No. 6), Georgetown (No. 13) and Penn State (No. 25) will all be vying for automatic bids.
Senior Michael Maag should guide the way for the men's team. He took second at the Ivy League Heptagonal and has been a strong finisher since he arrived on campus. Also looking to contribute to the team score will be freshman Brian Leung, senior Cameron Marantz, junior Ben Sitler and sophomore Rob Speare who have all been in the top of the pack this season. Others that could compete include: senior Bryan Sharkey, junior Jimmy Joy, Elliot Welder, sophomore Zach Predmore, freshman Max Kaulbach, Peter Maag, Joe Stilin, Trevor Van Ackeren and Sean Wilson.
The Tigers took third place last year, just missing out on an automatic bid to the championship. Only two returning runners competed in last year's regional, Maag and Sitler. Maag was Princeton's second finisher, placing ninth with a time of 30:30, and Sitler took 10th with a time of 30:33.
At the top of the regional rankings is Georgetown, which is ranked No. 9 in the country. Princeton is No. 2, followed by Penn State at No. 3. The Nittany Lions are also ranked nationally, at No. 29. Villanova and Duquense round out the top-five teams.
The top two teams from each of the nine regionals automatically qualify for the finals in Terre Haute, Ind., and the first four individuals not on a qualifying team are automatically qualified as well. The NCAA championship will take place on Monday, Nov. 24.
An awards ceremony will be held at Weaver Stadium at 2 p.m.
