(11/18/08) ? Proving why it is ranked No. 2/3 in the nation, the Rutgers
women's basketball team recorded an 83-35 victory over Princeton at the Louis
Brown Athletic Center on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
The Scarlet Knights started the game on a 9-0 run and shot
6-for-8 before the first media timeout was called in the 5th minute.
Later in the half, the Tigers started to find its offensive
rhythm, and picked up 14 of their 18 first-half points in the final eight
minutes. The team also continued its hot streak at the free throw line,
shooting 66.7 percent (6-for-9) in the first half, while the Scarlet Knights shot
57.1 percent (8-for-14). Despite its hot hands at the line, Rutgers headed into the
locker room with a 45-18 edge over Princeton.
Princeton started the second going on a 5-2 run, to bring
the score to 47-25 before Rutgers added the next
six points. With nine minutes to play, the Scarlet Knights finished out the
game scoring 24 of the next 27 points.
Senior Whitney Downs led the Tigers in scoring with 10
points, including going 4-for-4 from the free throw line and chipping in two
assists. Junior Cheryl Stevens led the team on the glass with seven rebounds
and had a team-best three blocks. Senior Jessica Berry contributed six points,
and freshman Lauren Johnson grabbed three rebounds.
Epiphanny Prince paced the Scarlet Knights with 15 points,
while Khadijah Rushdan had 11 points and Kia Vaughn added 10 points. Vaughn
brought down eight rebounds and picked up three blocks. Brittany Ray collected
four steals and had five boards.
Princeton shot 20.8 percent
for the game and had another incredible night at the free throw line, shooting
70.6 percent (12-for-17). Rutgers knocked down
55.2 percent of its shots and went 15-for-26 from the free thrown line.
Princeton (1-1) hosts Stony
Brook in the home opener on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 6 p.m.
