Princeton Runs for National Title on Monday

PRINCETON, N.J. (11/22/08) ? The Princeton women's cross country team will race for the national title on Monday, Nov. 24 at the NCAA Championship in Terre Haute, Ind.
Indiana State will host the championship at LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.
The race will begin at approximately 12:08 p.m., and will be televised live on CBS College Sports and on-line at www.NCAA.com.
The Tigers are fourth in the final U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll. Princeton held the No. 4 slot since Oct. 21. The remaining 29 teams in the national poll are also in the championship, along with Kentucky who grabbed an automatic bid.
Last year, Princeton finished 14th at the NCAA Championship, but had a better result at the Pre-Nationals in October. The Tigers took first place in the White race, beating out seven teams ranked in the top 15.
Guiding the Tigers will be junior Liz Costello. Costello has been the top runner all season, and was the first Princeton runner across the line at regionals, taking second place with a time of 21:15.
Megan Brandeland and Jolee VanLeuven will race in their final meet of their collegiate careers. Both competed in nationals last year, finishing in 21:44 and 22:27 respectively. Last month each improved on their times from 2007, with Brandeland crossing the line at 20:46.9 and VanLeuven at 21:05.8.
Freshman Alex Banfich and junior Reilly Kiernan will also be looking to be in the front of the pack. Banfich was the Tigers' third runner at regionals finishing in 21:51, while Kiernan also scored with a time of 22:19. Banfich clocked in at 20:57.4 and Kiernan at 21:02.1 at Pre-Nationals.
Sophomores Sarah Cummings and Ashley Higginson placed 22nd and 31st at regionals with times of 22:25 and 22:46, respectively. Both had impressive times at Pre-Nationals as well.
