School Record Performance By Maag Highlights Tiger Action At New Balance Collegiate Invitational
February 10, 2008 | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
Princeton junior Michael Maag broke a 17-year-old school record Saturday when he ran the 3,000 meters in 7:56.40 at the prestigious New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York City.
Maag's time bested the 7:58.66 ran by the great Bill Burke in 1991 and was also an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the event. The Tigers could have two runners in that event at NCAA's. Senior David Nightingale also set a personal best Saturday, running 7:59.66, also a provisional qualifier and now the third-best time in school history.
Maag had the fifth-best time in the event Saturday, while Nightingale's time was seventh-best in a big-time field that featured some of the nation's top schools on both the men's and womens sides.
On the women's side, freshman Brooke Russell had an excellent performance in the 1,000-meter "championship" race, finishing 8th overall in a time of 2:56.79. In the "college" race for the 800 meters, senior Karen Aherne was 10th in a time of 2:14.68.
Several relays had excellent performances on the men's side. Princeton's distance-medley relay group finished fifth in a strong group of 13 teams in the "championship" race. The Tigers ran 9:55.59 and finished behind only Texas, Arkansas, BYU and Georgetown. Princeton also ran in the championship bracket of the two-mile relay and finished seventh in a strong field.
In the mile relay, the Tigers were a close second behind Hampton in the "college" event, finishing the race in 3:17.61 to the Pirates' 3:17.11
In the field events, both Justin Frick and Ian Fox cleared 6 feet, 8 1/4 inches in the high jump for Princeton, while Duane Hynes had a mark of 22-5 in the long jump and Steve Slovenski cleared 15-3 in the "college" pole vault event.
Freshman Dennis Walsh competed in the "championship" race of the 1,000 meters and finished 16th overall in 2:28.48.
Both the Princeton men's and women's teams will compete next Saturday against Harvard and Yale in a tri-meet at Yale.
