Late Run Leads Yale Past Princeton, 67-56
February 15, 2008 | Men's Basketball
Nick Holmes scored eight of his game-high 18 points in a 14-0 Yale run late in the second half to lift the Bulldogs to a 67-56 win over Princeton in an Ivy League men's basketball game played before 3,073 at Jadwin Gym Friday night.
The Tigers (5-16, 2-4 Ivy) led by 11 points late in the first half, 44-37 after a Mike Strittmatter three-pointer with 12 minutes to go an 50-45 after a Noah Savage three-pointer with 7:14 left but went nearly six minutes without scoring after that.
Meanwhile, Holmes' three-pointer immediately after Savage's shot began the decisive run for Yale (10-11, 4-3), which won at Jadwin Gym for the second straight season. Eric Flato would put the Bulldogs ahead for good at 51-50 with a three-pointer from the right wing with 5:12 left, and another bomb from Holmes, this time from the left corner, made it 57-50 with just more than three minutes left.
Princeton got within five with 47 seconds left after Zach Finley's three-point play but could get no closer.
The Tigers were the team that trailed early in the game, but an impressive 15-0 run for Princeton in a six-minute span gave the Tigers a double-digit lead. Lincoln Gunn's three-pointer with 9:40 left put his team ahead 14-13, and another Gunn layup on the fast break thanks to a long feed from Marcus Schroeder made it 22-13 Princeton.
Yale would have the answer to that Princeton run, however, scoring six straight points late in the half to get back within one point at halftime.
Kyle Koncz had 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for Princeton, while Finley had 12 points and six rebounds. The Tigers shot 48% in the first half on the way to that double-digit lead but made just nine of 29 shots in the second half (38%).
Holmes also made all eight of his free throws on the way to his game-high 18 points, while Travis Pinick had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs. Both Ross Morin and Caleb Holmes came off the bench to score 10 points for Yale, which had just eight turnovers.
The first 26 minutes of the game featured six ties, the final one coming at 36-36 after Caleb Holmes hit the second of two free throws. Princeton missed all five of its shots and committed a pair of turnovers in the decisive 14-0 run for Yale.
Princeton limited Yale to just 22% shooting from the three-point arc (4 for 18), but the Bulldogs made 23 of 33 free-throw attempts and shot 48% in the decisive second half.
The Tigers host Brown, a 66-61 winner over Penn in Philadelphia Friday night, Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. The game features a pair of former Princeton Ivy League Players of the Year on the sidelines in Tiger head coach Sydney Johnson '97 and Brown head coach Craig Robinson '83, a two-time winner of the award.
