Brown Survives Schroeder's Last Shot, Wins In Overtime Over Princeton 65-63
February 16, 2008 | Men's Basketball
Brown survived a pair of missed free throws by Damon Huffman, a last chance from Princeton's Marcus Schroeder at the buzzer and a career-high 35 points from Tiger senior Noah Savage to hold on for a 65-63 overtime men's basketball win over Princeton before 2,532 at Jadwin Gym Saturday night.
Adrian Williams hit two free throws to put the Bears (14-8, 6-2 Ivy) ahead with 40 seconds left in overtime, Savage would then miss a three-point attempt with 20 seconds on the clock and the Tigers (5-17, 2-5 Ivy) were forced to foul. But Huffman, a better than 80% free-throw shooter for the season, missed both free throws, giving the Tigers a final shot.
Schroeder took an open shot from three-point range on the left wing just before the buzzer, but it was off the mark and Brown's Peter Sullivan grabbed the rebound as time expired.
Princeton led 49-39 with just less than nine minutes to go in regulation, but Brown came all the way back to tie the score at 55 when Sullivan hit a left-corner three-point shot with 44 seconds on the clock. That shot set up a wild final 40 seconds of regulation that ended with the score tied at 59.
Brown's Chris Skrelja was called for an off-the-ball foul after Sullivan's tying three-pointer, but Princeton's Jason Briggs made just one of two free throws on the other end to make it 56-55 Princeton. Huffman then put Brown ahead with 20 seconds left, cutting down the lane and taking a nice feed from Matt Mullery to make it 57-56 Brown.
But Savage, who shot 11 for 17 from the field and 7 for 11 from three-point range, faded behind the three-point line at the top of the key after a Princeton timeout and drilled his seventh trey of the game, putting the Tigers ahead 59-57.
Huffman wasted no time, however, driving the length of the court and nearly converting a three-point play in the lane, instead getting fouled with four seconds on the clock. He made both free throws to tie it at 59-59, and Kevin Steuerer's running jumper in the lane rimmed out for Princeton as time expired.
Savage scored 25 of his career-high 35 points in the second half and overtime; he scored 25 of Princeton's 38 total points in that stretch. His 35 points were the most by a Princeton player since Kevin "Moon" Mullin scored 38 points against San Diego in the 1984 NCAA tournament preliminary round and the most in Jadwin Gym by a Princeton player since Geoff Petrie scored 39 against Davidson in 1970.
Princeton led 25-21 at halftime, holding the Bears to just 37% shooting in the first half, and eventually extended that lead to double digits. Lincoln Gunn and Savage hit three-pointers on consecutive possessions for the Tigers to turn a 43-39 lead into a 49-39 advantage with 8:42 on the clock.
The Tigers had only two field goals in the final eight minutes however, both of them three-point shots from Savage.
Mark McAndrew, the Ivy League's leading scorer, led Brown with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Sullivan had 15 points and seven rebounds, while Mullery scored 12 and Huffman 10.
Zach Finley has 12 points for Princeton before fouling out late in regulation. Savage and Finley combined to shoot 17 for 26 from the field; the remainder of the Tigers shot a combined 6 for 29 from the field.
Brown swept its road trip to Penn and Princeton for the first time in program history. The game featured a pair of former Princeton Ivy Players of the Year on the sidelines in Brown's Craig Robinson '83 and Princeton's Sydney Johnson '97.
The Tigers are at Harvard and Dartmouth next weekend.
