Late Dartmouth Goal Sends Hockey Home Finale To 2-2 Tie
February 16, 2008 | Women's Ice Hockey
U.S. National Team forward Sarah Parsons redirected a last-minute slapshot past Kristen Young to help lead the Dartmouth women's hockey team to a 2-2 in Saturday's women's hockey home finale at Princeton. The Tigers, who nearly pulled off an upset over No. 1 Harvard Friday night, led 2-0 going into the third period, but couldn't hold off the hard-charging Big Green.
Princeton needed a win to move within a point of Dartmouth heading into the final weekend of ECAC regular season play. The Big Green is currently fourth with 26 points, while Princeton is fifth with 23 points. The top four teams host ECAC quarterfinal series, meaning Princeton will need to sweep the Clarkson-St. Lawrence road trip and get some help along the way.
The prognosis would have looked a lot better if not for Parsons' late goal. The sister of former Princeton men's player Brad Parsons, she positioned herself in front of Princeton goalie Kristen Young while Dartmouth skated with an empty net. Julia Bronson got the puck at the blue line and fired towards Young's left side, but Parsons directed into the right side of the goal to even the score and ignite the Dartmouth bench. Princeton never lost composure and outshot Dartmouth 3-2 in overtime, which included a late Tiger power play, but the Orange and Black couldn't get the winner past Carli Clemis.
Princeton jumped out to a 1-0 lead during a dominant first period, when the Tigers outshot the Big Green 12-3. Lizzie Keady fed a pass to Melanie Wallace, who took the puck down the right boards, then cut in towards the goal and wristed a shot past Clemis.
Dartmouth was resilient in the second period and earned an 11-4 advantage in shots, but the only one that mattered came from Princeton's Annie Greenwood. Following a shot from MaryKate Oakley, Greenwood put in her 12th goal of the season to send Princeton to a 2-0 advantage, which it would hold until 2:59 into the third period. On a Dartmouth power play, Maggie Kennedy secured a rebound from a a Shannon Bowman miss and knocked it into the net to cut the deficit to one goal.
Princeton didn't let up from there, but Clemis made several point-blank saves in the final period to keep Dartmouth within a goal. She left the ice with more than a minute left, and although Princeton fought off the first Big Green flurry, the late Parsons shot would send Princeton home with a tie.
