Men's Track Runs Past Harvard, Yale, In Annual Tri-Meet
February 16, 2008 | Men's Track and Field
Princeton men's track athletes won 10 out of the 15 individual events Saturday to roll past Harvard and Yale at the teams' annual tri-meet held this year at Yale's Coxe Cage. The Tigers ended the meet with 92 points, while Yale had 53 and Harvard finished with 25.
Tiger athletes won every field event Saturday, with five of the six winners getting IC4A indoor qualifying marks.
Alex Pessala's weight throw of 61-3 was an easy winner and an IC4A qualifier, while sophomore Eric Plummer's shot put of 53-5 was also a qualifier. Will Byrd was the only athlete at the meet to clear 16 feet in the pole vault; his clearance of 16' 3/4" was also an IC4A qualifier.
The Tigers were equally as dominant in the jumps. Freshman Garner McCloud's triple jump of 47 feet, 1/4 inch was a winner and an IC4A qualifier, as were the the high jumps of Justin Frick and Ian Fox, each of whom cleared 6' 10 1/4". In the long jump, Nick Crumpton won the event with a leap of 22' 9 3/4".
Even without their two top distance runners, Princeton was a winner in both distance events Saturday. Senior James O'Toole's winning mile was an impressive 4:09.23, easily an IC4A qualifier, while the Tigers took the top three places in the 3,000 meters behind cross country stalwarts Ben Sitler, Justin Pines and Frank Tinney. Sitler was the race winner in a time of 8:17.30. All three ran together in IC4A qualifying time.
Another Princeton freshman, Mike Eddy, won the 500 meters in 1:03.44, an IC4A qualifying time, while junior Ian Thomson took the 400 meters in 49.30 seconds, just off the qualifying time.
Meko McCray was a close second for Princeton in the 60 meters, but his time of 6.92 seconds was also an ECAC qualifier. In the 1,000 meters, both Jeff Carbonella and Ben White ran qualifying times as well.
