Women's Squash Tops Yale 7-2, Will Battle No. 1 Penn For National Championship
February 23, 2008 | Women's Squash
For the second straight season, the Princeton women's squash team will battle for the national championship. The second-seeded Tigers ousted Yale Saturday afternoon at the Jadwin Squash Courts to set up a second showdown with top-ranked Penn. The Quakers, who won a 5-4 regular-season match with Princeton, held off fourth-seeded Trinity 5-4 in the first semifinal.
Princeton held a 3-0 lead after the first round, thanks to a dramatic comeback win from freshman Jackie Moss at the No. 3 position. Moss, who lost to Yale in the regular season, was down 1-0 and 2-1 in games, and then 8-5 in the fifth game. She battled back to take a 10-8 victory in the fifth game and put momentum squarely in the Tigers' corner. No. 6 Kaitlin Sennatt and No. 9 Margaret Kent both won their matches, including a 3-0 win for Kent.
The second stage was where Princeton put the match away. Senior No. 5 Casey Riley and junior No. 8 Maggie O'Toole both won in three games to give Princeton an unbeatable 5-0 lead. Carly Grabowski and Emery Maine would add wins later in the match to complete the 7-2 win.
Princeton will take on Penn Sunday at 2 p.m. for the national title. Since the regular season meeting, Princeton has switched its 5-6 players (currently Casey Riley and Kaitlin Sennatt) and its 7-8 players (currently Carly Grabowski and Maggie O'Toole). Thus, there will be four different matches from the first meeting (Penn will use the same lineup, barring injury). Of the five same match-ups, Penn won three and lost two; three of the matches went five games, including two Quaker victories. If Trinity can upset Penn, the Bantam lineup would only feature changes at the top two spots, where Princeton pulled off a pair of tight wins last weekend.
Sunday's 1-3 matches on Jadwin Court #1 will be streamed online and can be accessed through TigerZone.
