11-0 Run To Open Second Half Propels Dartmouth To 71-52 Win Over Princeton
February 23, 2008 | Men's Basketball
Dartmouth scored the first 11 points of the second half to pull away from an undermanned Princeton squad Saturday night at Leede Arena, getting 18 points from DeVon Mosley in a 71-52 victory that sent the Tigers to their seventh straight loss.
Princeton (5-19, 2-7 Ivy) played without senior captain Kyle Koncz, who sustained injuries to his hip and abdomen in the second half of Princeton's overtime loss to Harvard Friday. Without Koncz, who had a double-double at Harvard with 14 points and 10 rebounds, the Tigers shot just 35% from the field and made just two three-point field goals.
Michael Giovacchini and Mosley each had three-point shots in Dartmouth's 11-0 run in the first four minutes of the second half, and the Big Green lead grew to 20 points when Clive Weeden scored on a short jumper with 15:40 left and 25 with 11 minutes left. The Big Green (9-15, 2-8 Ivy) made their first five shots of the second half.
All in all, Dartmouth's run was a 22-5 spurt in the first 8:15 of the second half. Princeton played much of the final 10 minutes of the game with its reserves on the court, but little could be done to stop the hot shooting of the Big Green, who would go on to lead by as many as 30 points before the Tigers scored the final 11 points of the game. Dartmouth shot 54% for the game (25 for 46).
Princeton head coach Sydney Johnson went with an unusual starting five with Koncz out. Freshman Dan Mavraides, who attended prep school at Phillips Exeter in New Hampshire last year, made his first career start, while Marcus Schroeder reentered the starting lineup after coming off the bench the previous 11 games.
Both teams would start slowly, but Dartmouth began to pull away thanks to the three-point shooting of DeVon Mosley and the all-around play of Alex Barnett. Mosley had a pair of three-point shots in a 14-6 Big Green spurt that started midway through the half, and Barnett's fast-break dunk after a Princeton turnover made it 29-19 Dartmouth with 3:20 left.
The Tigers trailed 33-25 at halftime after falling behind by double digits late in the half, with both Marcus Schroeder and Zach Finley scoring eight points for Princeton in the first 20 minutes.
Schroeder had 10 points for Princeton, as did Zach Finley, while Mavraides had eight points. Alex Barnett added 16 points for the Big Green, which had lost 57-53 to Princeton at Jadwin Gym Feb. 1.
Princeton plays at Brown and Yale next weekend. Cornell improved to 10-0 in league play and moved three games ahead of Brown in the league standings with a nine-point victory over the Bears in Ithaca Saturday.
