14-0 Second-Half Run Lifts Brown To 64-57 Win In Men's Basketball
February 29, 2008 | Men's Basketball
Damon Huffman scored a game-high 18 points and ignited a 14-0 Brown second-half run with a three-point shot as the Bears pulled away from Princeton, 64-57, in a men's basketball game played at the Pizzitola Center Friday night.
Brown (16-9, 8-3 Ivy) trailed 43-38 after Nick Lake's three-pointer for Princeton with 12 minutes left but then scored the next 14 points, a stretch that started with Huffman's three-point shot on his team's next possession. Meanwhile, the Tigers (5-20, 2-8 Ivy) went cold from the field, going nearly nine minutes without a field goal after Lake's three-pointer.
Princeton, which fell behind by as many as 12 points late in the half, pulled within 57-51 with two minutes left after a Noah Savage three-pointer, but Kyle Koncz's three-point shot after a Brown turnover was no good and the Bears made enough free throws after that to put the game away.
The Tigers, who led by as many as eight points in the first half, outscored Brown 16-8 in the first eight minutes of the second half to retake the lead. But after Lake's three-pointer, Princeton missed its next nine shots from the field before Koncz's three-pointer finally ended the stretch and made it 57-48 Brown with 3:27 left.
"It's been a similar story that we've had these stretches in games throughout the season," said Princeton head coach Sydney Johnson. "We have to learn how to fight through it a little better."
Brown took the lead for good with 9:56 left when Mark McAndrew hit a right-corner three-point shot and was fouled by Princeton's Zach Finley on the play. He missed the ensuing free throw, but the Bears' run continued until Marcus Schroeder made a pair of free throws with 6:57 left for Princeton.
Lake had career highs of 16 points and seven rebounds for Princeton in 26 minutes off the bench. The Tigers, who also got 16 points from Noah Savage, shot just 6 for 21 from three-point range, however, including 0 for 8 in the first half.
"We played hard but a few plays really hurt us during that stretch," said Lake, who made 5 of his 9 shots from the field for the game, including 2 of 5 attempts from three-point range.
Four Brown players scored in double figures as McAndrew and Matt Mullery each added 14 points and Chris Skrelja had 11 points and 12 rebounds. Brown shot 53% in the decisive second half from the field and 15 for 21 from the foul line in the last 20 minutes.
Princeton got off to a solid start despite early foul trouble to Finley and Savage, getting energy off the bench from Lake and Jason Briggs to take a 17-9 lead on a Briggs' baseline jumper with 10:44 on the clock. The Tigers still led by seven at 23-16 with 5:35 left in the half, but Brown scored the next seven points after that and took a 30-27 lead at halftime after Huffman drilled a "three" at the buzzer.
Kyle Koncz returned to the starting lineup for Princeton after missing last Saturday's game at Dartmouth. He had three points and three assists in 30 minutes before fouling out late in the game.
Princeton plays at Yale Saturday night. Game time is 8 p.m. Brown defeated the Tigers for the fifth consecutive time.
