February 27, 2008 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON -- Princeton senior Diana Matheson will resume her world tour with the Canadian national women's soccer team, this time headed to Europe and Mexico followed, hopefully, by a trip to China for the Olympic Games.
Matheson will leave this weekend to play in the Cyprus Cup on the Mediterranean island. The tournament will consist of three games against Russia Mar. 5, Japan Mar. 7 and a team to be decided based on results in the six-team tournament. The Canadians will also have a friendly with Scotland on Mar. 10.
After leaving Cyprus, Canada will meet France outside Paris on Mar. 14 before heading home for a brief break.
In April, Canada will have to prove itself as one of the top two teams in a group of six at the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament in Juarez, Mexico, Apr. 2-13. The Canadians will start the qualifying process against Trinidad and Tobago on Apr. 2 followed by Costa Rica on Apr. 6. A semifinal and final will follow to decide the Olympic qualifiers. The Olympics in Beijing run Aug. 8-24.
