PRINCETON ? A lengthy run by Columbia allowed the Lions to take a 27-point halftime lead that was too much for the Princeton women's basketball team to overcome Saturday evening in a 78-64 defeat at Jadwin Gym.
The loss drops Princeton to 1-4 in Ivy play and 4-17 overall while Columbia improves to 7-13 and 4-2.
Meagan Cowher led Princeton with 19 points, bringing her to 1,500 for her career. Cowher is the fourth Princeton woman to reach that total. Jessica Berry (11 points) and Whitney Downs (10) were also in double-figures.
Michele Gage led Columbia with 24 points and 13 rebounds while three other Lions, Danielle Browne, Sara Yee and Brittney Carfora, had 13 points apiece.
Princeton led 16-14 midway through the first half when Columbia closed the period on a 31-2 run that gave the Lions the 27-point lead at 45-18.
Columbia's largest lead was 28 on three occasions early in the second half before Princeton began chipping away. A Jillian Schurle bucket cut the deficit to 12 with 5:45 left, but Columbia answered with a 7-0 run to put the game away.
Columbia won the rebounding battle, 49-34, and outshot Princeton 44.8 percent to 33.3 percent while having more turnovers, 20-18.
Princeton will return to the court Friday at Yale and Saturday at Brown to complete the first tour through the Ivy League.
