March 19, 2008 | Baseball
CARY, N.C. -- Sophomore Jack Murphy homered in the first inning to give the Princeton baseball team a 2-0 lead at third-ranked North Carolina, but the Tar Heels evened the score in the second and went ahead in the fifth in an 8-2 win on Wednesday afternoon. Murphy and junior Adrian Turnham had two hits in the game.
A day after being three-hit by UNC, the Tigers got off to a good start in the first inning. With two outs, Turnham singled through the right side and he came around to score when Murphy belted his fifth home run of the season, a shot to right center.
The Tar Heels answered back in the second inning with two runs of their own. With two outs, Chad Flack doubled and came around to score on a Garrett Gore single. Gore went to second when Ben bunting was a hit by a pitch and scored on a fielding error. UNC then went ahead 3-2 in the fifth inning on a bases loaded sac fly.
Sophomore Langford Stuber started the game for Princeton and he allowed three runs, two of which were earned, in four-plus innings of work. Junior Brad Gemberling allowed two runs in three innings of work and sophomore Jon Brosious allowed three runs in the eighth.
UNC added two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to reach the 8-2 final.
Princeton is now 6-6 on the season and will have Thursday off before opening a four-game series this Friday at Navy.
