Tigers Sweep Delaware Behind Murphy's Six RBI In Game 2
March 02, 2008 | Baseball
NEWARK, Del. -- Princeton swept a doubleheader at Delaware Sunday afternoon, as sophomore Jack Murphy hit his fourth home run in as many games and had six RBI's to lead the Tigers to an 8-5 win in the nightcap at Bob Hannah Stadium. Murphy also had a round tripper in the 6-4 Game 1 Princeton win.
The Tigers took three out of four games against the Blue Hens on their season-opening weekend of 2008. Princeton plays three games at Richmond next weekend.
Game 2
Murphy got his big game started early for Princeton, hitting a three-run homer with one out in the first inning after Dan DeGeorge doubled to begin the game and Noel Gonzales-Luna walked. The Tigers never trailed after that.
The sophomore catcher would get another RBI on a sacrifice fly to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead in the third inning and then break open a close game with a two-run single in the top of the eighth, knocking home Gonzales-Luna and Derek Beckman and giving Princeton an 8-3 lead.
Matt Welsh was credited with the win for Princeton, relieving starter Dan Barnes in the fifth inning and pitching three scoreless innings after that. Delaware did score in the eighth inning, but Welsh had four strikeouts and just one walk in four innings.
Four players had two hits for Princeton, including Gonzales-Luna, Brian Berkowitz and designated hitter Brandon Englert.
Game 1
Princeton spotted Delaware a 3-0 lead as the Blue Hens plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the Tigers answered back with four runs of their own in the top of the second inning to go ahead 4-3. In that inning, sophomore Jon Broscious got Princeton on the scoreboard with an RBI-gourndout. Princeton then got a run on an error before DeGeorge belted his first home run of the season, a two-run blast, to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead.
Murphy made the lead 5-3 when he led off the third inning with a home run. It was his third of the season and he has a longball in each of Princeton's first three games. Delaware got a run back in the fourth, but Turnham's solo shot in the fifth closed out the scoring.
Sophomore David Hale got the win with 3.2 innings of work. He allowed three earned runs on five hits, all while striking out six batters. Freshman David Palms came on after that and allowed one hit in the next 3.1 innings to record the save.
