March 08, 2008 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. -- Senior Spencer Lucian and sophomore David Hale each homered and drove in two runs to lead the Princeton baseball team to an 8-5 win over Richmond on Saturday afternoon at Pitt Field. Princeton broke open a 2-2 game with four runs in the seventh inning.
The game, originally set to start at 12 noon as part of a doubleheader, was pushed back to 2:30 p.m., and started out as a pitcher's duel between Princeton senior Steven Miller and Richmond's Brian Farrell. Richmond got the first run of the game in the third inning on an RBI-single, but Princeton tied things up at 1-1 in the top of the fourth when sophomore Jon Broscious doubled home sophomore Jack Murphy.
Richmond regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when a sac fly plated an unearned run, but the Tigers answered in the sixth inning when Hale singled home Murphy.
Tied at 2-2 in the sixth, the Tigers broke the game open with four runs. After junior Dan DeGeorge reached on an error and then stole second, freshman Matt Connor plated him with a single. Connor scored on another error when Murphy reached, and then Murphy came around to score his third run of the game when Lucian delivered his first homer of the season, a shot to right center.
The Tigers added single runs in the eight and the ninth innings. In the eighth, a sac fly from junior Adrian Turnham scored junior Derek Beckman and in the ninth, Hale hit a solo homer to right center. Richmond made things close in the bottom of the ninth when Andrew Lowry hit a three-run homer, but senior Christian Staehely was able to get the final out and seal the Princeton win.
Miller allowed two runs, one earned, in four innings of work. He gave way to Staehely, who picked up the win, allowing three runs on four hits. Each pitcher fanned five batters.
Princeton is now 4-1 on the season and returns to action tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader with Richmond at 12 noon.
