March 09, 2008 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. -- The Princeton baseball team continued its hot-hitting start to the season by sweeping Richmond in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Pitt Field. Princeton scored 10 runs in each game, winning the opener 10-2 and the nightcap 10-7. Junior Adrian Turnham had five hits and drove in five runs in the doubleheader.
Game 1
Richmond jumped ahead with a run on back-to-back doubles in the first inning, but the Tigers got that run back in the second and added three more in the fourth to begin to pull away in an eventual 10-2 win. Turnham and sophomore Jack Murphy each had three hits in the win, while Turnham, sophomore Jon Broscious and senior Spencer Lucian both had a pair of RBIs. Junior Dan DeGeorge scored a team-high three runs in the win.
After falling a run behind in the first inning, sophomore David Hale put Princeton on the scoreboard when his single to center field plated Lucian. Princeton went on to load the bases in the inning with no outs, but Richmond starting pitcher Rob Berzinskas worked out of trouble and the game stayed tied.
The Tigers again threatened in the fourth inning and were able to push three runs across the plate to move ahead 4-1. Senior Micah Kaplan hit a one-out double, then scored on a DeGeorge infield single as he was running with contact. Sophomore Noel Gonzales-Luna then walked, pushing DeGeorge to second and he was able to score on a Turnham single. Another walk to Murphy loaded the bases, and the final of the inning came in when Lucian drew a walk.
Princeton added two more runs in the sixth inning to make its lead 6-1. With runners on second and third, Murphy singled to score a run, then a Lucian sac fly plated Princeton's sixth run. The Tigers continued to pad their lead an inning later with three more runs. A Turnham single plated DeGeorge, then back-to-back singles loaded the bases for sophomore Jon Broscious, who doubled to score Turnham and Murphy, but Lucian was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Richmond got a run back in the bottom of the seventh on a sac fly, but Princeton got the run back in the ninth when junior Eric Zaziski hit a fielder's choice with the bases load to score the final run.
Freshman Dan Barnes got the win for Princeton. He pitched four innings, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out five. Junior Brad Gemberling made his first appearance of the season after Barnes and allowed one run in three innings of work. He also surrendered four hits and struck out five. He also benefited from a fine defensive play by Hale, who threw out a runner at the plate in the fifth inning. Freshman David Palms closed out the game with two innings of scoreless work. He allowed a single hit and fanned three.
Game 2
In the day's second game, the Tigers took advantage of eight Richmond errors in a 10-7 win to complete the sweep of the three-game series. Turnham had two hits and three RBIs in the win, while junior Andrew Doupe hit a two-run homer in the win.
Princeton went ahead with a run in the second inning, then added a pair of runs in the third, fourth and fifth frames to race out to a big lead. In the second inning the Tigers got their first run when Murphy, who began the inning with a leadoff double, scored as Kaplan reached on an error.
Princeton added two runs in the third inning when Turnham plated DeGeorge with a groundout and Lucian plated freshman Matt Connor with a sac fly to right field. Princeton added two more runs an inning later when a Turnham single to shallow center field scored two.
Richmond got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth, but Princeton quickly regained the five-run advantage when Doupe hit his first homer of the season in the top of the fifth inning. The Spiders added a run un the bottom of the fifth to make the score 7-3 before the teams each traded two runs in the seventh inning.
In the top of the seventh, Zaziski scored on an error, then Connor plated a run with a single to right field. A pair of RBI single in the bottom of the inning though cut the lead back to four runs. Princeton added a 10th and final run in the top of the ninth inning when Kaplan scored his second run of the game on an error.
Richmond made things interesting in its final at bat, pushing two runs across the plate before freshman Tim Fees was able to quell the late threat.
Hale started the game for Princeton and allowed three runs, only on earned, in five innings of work. He struck out six to get the win. Sophomore Langford Stuber, freshmen Matt Grabowski, Matt Welsh and Fees all worked in relief.
