Costello Nearly Earns NCAA Automatic Qualifying Mark In Mile At Notre Dame
March 09, 2008 | Women's Track and Field
Sophomore Liz Costello ran the 16th-best indoor mile time in the nation this season Saturday at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational, improving her chances for qualification to next weekend's NCAA championship in the event.
Costello's time was 4:40.37, good for third place in the strong field and just .37 shy of the automatic NCAA qualifying mark of 4:40 flat. Selections for the NCAA championship will be announced early this week.
The top 14 runners in Saturday's race all ran automatic or provisional qualifying marks. Arkansas's Dacia Barr broke the 4:40 mark to win the race and earn automatic qualification.
Princeton's Heather Iatauro also went to Notre Dame for the mile, and she ran 4:56.94.
