Princeton Splits Doubleheader at Yale
April 05, 2008 | Baseball
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Princeton baseball team split Saturday's Ivy League doubleheader at Yale, dropping the opening game 3-2 before winning the nightcap 8-5. Sophomore Jon Broscious, shown pitching, had a big game at the plate in the nightcap, with four hits, two home runs and four RBIs.
Game 1
Sophomore Jack Murphy drove in two runs, but it was not enough as Princeton fell to Yale 3-2 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Junior Dan DeGeorge also had two hits in the game as senior Spencer Lucian had Princeton's final hit as Yale's Brian Irving held Princeton to just five hits.
The teams traded unearned runs in the first inning. In the top half of the frame, junior Derek Beckman was hit to lead off the inning and stole second and advanced to third on an error. He scored when Murphy singled up the middle. In the bottom of the inning, leadoff hitter Josh Cox reached on an error and came around to score on Ryan Lavarnway's double.
The scores stayed tied at 1-1 until Yale added two additional runs in the fifth inning. Andy Megee hit a leadoff triple and scored on a Cox single. Then Cox came around to score on a P.J. Gorynski single. Princeton got one of the runs back in the top of the sixth. DeGeorge hit a one-out double and scored an out later, when Murphy doubled him home.
Junior Brad Gemberling allowed three runs through six innings and took the loss. He allowed eight hits and struck out five. Irving held Princeton to two runs on five hits and struck out 12 batters.
Game 2
Sophomore Jon Broscious homered twice and drove in four runs as Princeton gained a split of the doubleheader with an 8-3 win in the nightcap. After spotting Yale a 2-0 lead, the Tigers went ahead with four runs in the fifth and added two more in the sixth on their way to the win.
Yale scored runs in the second and third innings to go ahead 2-0. In the second, Frank Doyle doubled in a run and Gorynski led off the third with a solo home run.
Princeton trailed until the fifth, when it put up four runs to take the lead. Three consecutive singles to start the inning loaded the bases for Beckman, who reached on a fielder's choice, but thanks to a Yale error, his fielder's choice resulted in two runs being scored. DeGeorge and junior Adrian Turnham then hit back-to-back run-scoring groundouts to put Princeton ahead 4-2.
The Tigers tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning when Broscious homered to right center following a single from sophomore David Hale. Yale got a run back in the seventh, but Broscious then got the run back for Princeton when he hit a solo homer in the eighth inning. It was his second long ball of the day and his third of the season. He also singled in a run in the ninth.
Yale closed the final gap with two runs in the ninth inning when Gorynski hit a two-run homer, his second home run of the game.
Senior Christian Staehely allowed two runs on five hits in six innings to pick up the win and is now 3-2 this season. Freshman Dan Barnes allowed three runs in three innings and was credited with a save.
