Top-Ranked Women's Lightweights Upset By Wisconsin At Easterns
May 18, 2008 | General, Women's Rowing - Lightweight
The top-ranked Princeton women's lightweight crew was upset by defending champion Wisconsin in the varsity eight grand final of the 2008 EAWRC championship, held Sunday at Cooper River in Camden, N.J. Princeton medalled in all three races, including another silver in the second varsity.
The Eastern silver medal was the second straight for Princeton, which was beaten by less than one second by Wisconsin. The Badgers finished in 6:41.35, while Princeton finished second in 6:42.12. Those two squads broke away from the field and topped third-place Georgetown by more than seven seconds. Princeton and Wisconsin are now 1-1 on the season and will likely meet one more time, at the IRA grand final on June 7 at Cooper River. In the regular season finale, Princeton defeated Wisconsin on Lake Carnegie.
Wisconsin also won the second varsity eight final in a time of 6:53.83, while Princeton placed second in 6:58.61. Again, those two boats left the field, with Radcliffe finished third in 7:13.12.
Princeton picked up bronze in the novice four (8:24.10), placing behind Wisconsin and Radcliffe.
Head coach Paul Rassam and the Tigers will now focus on the IRA weekend, where Princeton picked up a silver medal in 2007 and five national championships in program history.
