June 09, 2008 | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
NCAA East regional high jump champion Justin Frick as well as women's distance runners Ashley Higginson and Jolee VanLeuven will compete for Princeton at this week's NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
The championship begins Wed., June 11 and continues through Sat.. June 14, at Drake Stadium. CBS College Sports Network (formerly CSTV) will provide live TV coverage on Fri., June 13 from 8-11 p.m. ET, while CBS will have live coverage on Sat., June 14, from 4-6 p.m. ET.
Frick, a sophomore, earned automatic qualification into the event by winning the high jump at the NCAA East Regional last month at Florida State. His career-best mark at that event was 2.19 meters (7 feet, 2 1/4 inches), among the top 15 marks in the nation in Division I this season.
The men's high jump qualifying round begins at 7:15 p.m. ET on Wednesday in Des Moines. Should Frick advance to the final round, that competition begins at 8 p.m. Friday.
Higginson, a freshman, fell just short of automatic qualification in the 5,000 at the East Regional but earned an at-large bid to the NCAA championship meet thanks to a time of 16:22.56 in an impressive victory in the event at the Penn Relays in late April. Her time at the regional meet was 16:32, good for sixth place in a field in which the top five automatically qualified for the national meet. She also won the Heptagonal championship in the 5,000 meters this spring.
The semifinals for the women's 5,000 meters take place Wednesday night at 9:10 p.m. ET. Should Higginson advance to the final, she would race at 10:15 p.m. Friday night.
VanLeuven ran in the 5,000 meters at the East regional (there is no 10,000 at the regional meet). She had solidified a place in the national 10,000 meters earlier in the season by running 34:15.61 for the 25 laps at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in California, then won the 10,000 at Ivy League Heptagonals in early May. Her time at Mt. SAC is one of the top 20 times for the event this season.
