Field Hockey Faces Challenge Sunday at Fifth-Ranked UConn

The 17th-ranked Princeton field hockey team faces its toughest challenge of the young season when the Tigers travel to fifth-ranked Connecticut on Sunday afternoon. Princeton has opened the season 3-0 and will take on the 4-0 Huskies.
Princeton is off to its best start since the 2003 season when the Tigers opened 3-0 as well. The last time Princeton opened the season 4-0 came in 2001 when Princeton won its first five games en route to a 17-3 record and an NCAA semifinal appearance.
Princeton's strong start has included three wins that all have all come on the road. The Tigers have outscored their opponents 17-2 this season in wins over Richmond, William & Mary and Lehigh.
Princeton posted a dominating 11-1 win in its last contest on Wednesday night at Richmond. Eight players scored goals in the win, including three from freshman Kathleen Sharkey, who also garnered an assist, and two from senior Holly McGarvie, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Week. Princeton outshot Lehigh 44-1 in the game and produced its highest goal total in more than 10 seasons, dating back to a 12-0 win over Columbia on Nov. 5, 1997. Princeton has now scored 11 goals on three occasions.
McGarvie's two goals in the Lehigh game kept her on top of the team scoring charts with four goals and an assist for nine points. She has scored a goal in all three Tiger games this season. Sharkey's seven-point game at Lehigh has her second on the team in scoring, tied with senior Candice Arner, who scored twice at William & Mary and added a goal and an assist against Lehigh. Junior Christina Bortz, with five points, and freshman Katie Reinprecht, with four, round out the top five. Senior Sarah Reinprecht leads the team with two assists, while nine others have recorded a single assist.
Sophomore Jennifer King has carried the load in goal early in the season and has allowed just one goal in 175 minutes of action. She has a 0.40 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage.
Princeton's game on Sunday against UConn marks the first of five games for the Tigers scheduled against team currently ranked in the nation's top 20. The Tigers will meet a Husky team that is 4-0 on the season with wins over Sacred Heart, Maine, Penn State and Yale. UConn has outscored its four opponents 13-2 and will take on UMass on Friday afternoon prior to its meeting with Princeton.
The Huskies lead the all-time series with Princeton 8-6, but the Tigers won the last game in the series one season ago at home. On that day, the Tigers knocked off the third-ranked Huskies 2-1. The teams traded goals in the first 10 minutes as Lauren Aird gave UConn a 1-0 lead that was quickly answered by McGarvie. Paige Schmidt provided the Tigers with the game winner with four minutes left on the clock off a corner. Junior goalkeeper Cynthia Wray made seven saves in the win.
