Volleyball Completes Sweep Of Rose Hill Classic
September 13, 2008 | Women's Volleyball
The Princeton women's volleyball team is off to another fast start.
Despite facing opponents who started playing one week earlier, the
reigning Ivy League champion Tigers completed a sweep of the 2008 Rose
Hill Classic with Saturday victories over Stony Brook and Manhattan.
Princeton opened the day by defeating Stony Brook 3-1. After Princeton took the opener 25-18, Stony Brook handed the Tigers their first individual game loss of the season, 25-22. Princeton won a tight 25-23 decision in the third game and ran away with the momentum in a decisive 25-14 game-four win. Princeton hit .289 for the match, including a match-best .393 in the final game.
2007 Ivy League Player of the Year Parker Henritze led Princeton with a double-double (15 kills, 15 digs), while senior middle Lindsey Ensign added 12 kills and two blocks. Junior Sheena Donohue added 12 kills of her own, while senior right-side starter Kelli Grobe recorded eight kills. Freshman middle Cathryn Quinn followed a strong opening-night effort with seven kills and two blocks in the win.
The offense was paced by first-team All-Ivy setter Bailey Robinson (40 assists, 10 digs), while the defense was led by freshman libero Hillary Ford (11 digs).
Through two games of the Manhattan match, Princeton looked like it would cruise to the Classic title. The Tigers won 25-22 and 25-21, but the Jaspers battled back to win the third and fourth games. An experienced Princeton team would not be thwarted in the fifth; the Tigers allowed only one Manhattan kill in a 15-6 victory.
Ensign led Princeton with 19 kills in the final match, while Henritze picked up another double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. Donohue recorded 16 kills, while Robinson recorded a match-high 55 assists. For the first time during the weekend, head coach Glenn Nelson was able to go deep into his roster and get several players their first match experience of the season.
Princeton will travel to Philadelphia to take on Temple Wednesday night and will head to Hamilton, N.Y., for the Colgate Invitational next weekend.
