Women's Hockey Blanks Harvard 1-0
January 02, 2009 | Women's Ice Hockey
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Freshman Heather Landry scored the lone goal and senior goaltender Kristen Young made 31 saves as the Princeton women's hockey team blanked Harvard 1-0 on Friday night at the Bright Hockey Center. Princeton's win moved the Tigers to .500 at 8-8-1 overall and 5-5-0 in league play.
Princeton played a strong road game for the win, limiting Harvard's good scoring chances and taking advantage of its own in the win as Landry provided Princeton the only goal it would need at 10:09 of the second period with assists from classmates Charissa Stadnyk and Julie Johnson. Landry's goal was her fourth of the season.
Young was strong in net for the Tigers as she stopped all 31 shots she faced for her first shutout of the season and the 13th of her career. She also stopped 30 or more shots for the third-straight game as she has now turned away 123 of the last 129 shots she has faced.
Harvard outshot the Tigers 31-21 and had its biggest shot advantage in the opening period, firing 13 shots on Young while the Tigers managed six. Neither team converted on the power play in the game as Princeton had five chances and Harvard had four.
Princeton moved to 8-8-1 overall and 5-5-0 in the ECAC with the win as Princeton gained a spot in the ECAC standings and now sits even with Clarkson in fifth place. Harvard falls to 5-6-3 overall and 5-3-2 in the league.
Princeton's win at Harvard was its first since an 8-2 triumph in November of 1996. Princeton had gone 0-10-1 in the 11 games at Harvard since and is now 11-20-1 all-time at Harvard. The win also snapped a five-game winless streak against Harvard and snapped a 27-game unbeaten streak by Harvard on its home ice.
Princeton completes the weekend tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. at Dartmouth.
