The Princeton women's hockey team returns to action following the finale exam period on Tuesday night when it takes on its travel-partner Quinnipiac. Princeton, which topped the Bobcats 4-2 in early December, enters the game having its last four games, and seven of its last nine contests.
Princeton started the season 4-6-1 and seemed to turn a corner with its 4-2 win over Quinnipiac on Dec. 2. From that day on, the Tigers have lost just twice while taking wins on the road at Minnesota-Duluth, Harvard, Dartmouth and Rensselaer. The latter three of which avenged losses at home from earlier in the season.
Princeton is a perfect 4-0 in 2009 and has allowed three goals in the four games played since the calendar changed. That four-game win streak lifted Princeton into the national polls for the first time all season. Princeton was ranked for three weeks in a row, but dropped out of today's poll after two idle weekends. The Tigers are the first team receiving votes in the newest poll.
The Tigers last played the Jan. 9-10 weekend and picked up a pair of 3-1 wins at Rensselaer and Union. Junior Maddie Endicott picked up the game winner at RPI, while junior Melanie Wallace had a pair of helpers. Freshman Paula Romanchuk and junior Stephanie Denino also scored in the win. A day later Wallace, senior Annie Greenwood and freshman Charissa Stadnyk all scored in a 3-1 win at Union as seven Tigers recorded points. Senior Kristen Young backstopped the Tigers to both wins.
Wallace's three-point weekend lifted her atop the Tiger scoring charts with 18 points on five goals and 13 assists. She is two points ahead of sophomore Sasha Sherry, who has 16 points this season. Princeton's lead goal scorer is Romanchuk with eight and she ranks third with 15 points. Princeton has six players in double digits for points and five more within two of reaching the plateau.
While the Tigers were off for exams, many of the other ECAC teams caught up to Princeton in terms of games played and now all 12 league teams have either played 13 or 14 times. Princeton dropped into a three-way tie for fifth place with Clarkson and Rensselaer with 16 points. Princeton and Clarkson each have played 13 games, while RPI has played 14. The trio sits two points behind a third-place tie between Colgate and Harvard, which each have 18 points. St. Lawrence (23) and Dartmouth (20) sit first and second. The top four teams gain home ice for the opening round of the ECAC playoffs.
Princeton takes on ninth-place Quinnipiac on Tuesday on the road. The Tigers defeated the Bobcats 4-2 at home on Dec. 2 scoring two late goals in a 4-2 win. Denino scored the game winner with 5:26 remaining to snap a 2-2 tie and lift the Tigers to victory. Junior Julie Flynn, Romanchuk and freshman Julie Johnson scored the other Princeton goals in the win.
Quinnipiac is 3-18-4 overall and 2-7-4 in the ECAC. The Bobcats have three ties in their last four games, skating to ties at Dartmouth, Union and Rensselaer. The Bobcats have three wins on the season as well, topping Syracuse, Colgate and Union. Princeton is 7-0-1 all-time against the Bobcats and has won two in a row since a 1-1 tie early last season.
