Donohue Pushes Volleyball To Exciting 3-1 Road Win At Brown
October 11, 2009 | Women's Volleyball
Finally, the Princeton women's volleyball team was the one to rally late for victory. After a season full of heartbreaking late defeats, the Tigers rallied from a 19-13 deficit in the fourth set to claim a 3-1 victory at Brown; it was both Princeton's first road and Ivy League victory of the season.
Senior co-captain Sheena Donohue punctuated a tremendous effort with three straight kills to close out Princeton's third win of the season. Donohue, who recorded 20 kills and 21 digs while hitting .283, finished off a final rally to give Princeton the 25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23 win. Princeton is now 3-11 on the season, 1-2 in the league.
While Donohue may have had the best match, she was far from the lone contributor for the Tigers. Fellow co-captain Taylor Carroll was a leader on the defensive end with 21 digs and four blocks, while sophomore Hillary Ford followed closely with 18 digs. Freshman setter Molly Bagshaw recorded 42 assists, nine of which went to classmate Lydia Rudnick. Sophomore Cathryn Quinn recorded seven kills and four blocks.
Princeton took a big lead in the first set, but was forced to hold off a furious charge for an opening win. From a 24-14 lead, Princeton needed a Rudnick kill for a 25-22 win. The second set was tight throughout, with Princeton holding a 24-23 lead when Bagshaw and Quinn clinched the win with a block. Brown claimed the third and led the fourth 19-13, but Princeton won 12 of the final 15 points to win the match. Trailing 23-22 in the final set, Donohue killed three straight balls to get her team into the Ivy League win column.
