Volleyball Suffers Another Heartbreaker, Falls 3-2 At Harvard
October 17, 2009 | Women's Volleyball
One point away from a dramatic road Ivy League victory, the Princeton women's volleyball team once again was left dealing with a disappointing loss. Despite double-digit kills from four players and a 32-dig effort from Hillary Ford, the Tigers fell 3-2 at Harvard with a 16-14 loss in the fifth set.
Sheena Donohue led all Tigers with 18 kills, while fellow outside Lydia Rudnick was just behind that pace with 17 kills. Both Taylor Carroll and Cathryn Quinn had 12 kills, while freshman setter Molly Bagshaw recorded 54 assists. Ford led a strong defensive effort with her 32 digs, while Donohue was second with 16 digs. Both Bagshaw and Rudnick had 15, while Torri Patel had 11.
While many of the statistical categories, including the final score, were very close, Harvard held a commanding lead in blocks with a 13-2 advantage. Anne Ingersol had eight blocks for the Crimson, while Chelsea Ono Horn had seven blocks to go along with a nine-kill, zero-error performance.
Harvard took the opening set 25-23, but Princeton bounced back with 25-19 and 25-16 wins. The Crimson got back in the match with a 25-16 win in the fourth, sending yet another Princeton contest to the limit. Harvard built off its momentum from the fourth set and built a 3-0 lead off a pair of Taylor Docter kills and a service ace. Princeton head coach Jolie Ward called timeout and Princeton immediately responded with four straight points. The set would go on the see-saw from there, with the Tigers actually grabbing the first match point. The Crimson erased it with a kill from Sandra Fryhofer, who would follow up with a combo block with Natalie Sandman to give the Crimson a match point. Harvard picked up its seventh win of the year when Carroll recorded a hitting error for a 16-14 Crimson win.
Princeton is now 3-12 overall, 1-3 in the Ivy League and will try to pick up a second league win Saturday at 4 p.m. when it travels to Hanover, N.H., for a showdown with Dartmouth.
