Women's XC Cruises To a Second-Place Finish at Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (10/2/09) - The Princeton women's cross country team took second behind No. 1-ranked Washington at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, Oct. 2 in South Bend, Ind.
Washington proved its top billing, taking places 1-2-3-4-23 in the 5k race. No. 6 Princeton earned 68 points, with all five scorers in the top 25. No. 15 Florida was third, followed by No. 22 Penn State, No. 13 Arizona State, No. 25 New Mexico and No. 3 Florida State that finished seventh.
Senior Liz Costello was the first runner not from Washington to cross the line, covering the course in 16:41. Sophomore Alex Banfich took 10th at 17:02, followed by junior Sarah Cummings in 13th place with a time of 17:05. Senior Reilly Kiernan was 16th bringing in a time of 17:09 and junior Ashley Higginson was four seconds behind to be the final Princeton scorer. Four other Tigers ran the race, including senior Alexa Glencer and freshman Mel Newbery who finished in the top 100, and freshman Alexis Mikaelian and junior Liz Deir.
Meanwhile at the Paul Short Run at Lehigh University, junior Brooke Russell medaled with a third-place finish of 22:12 in the Women's JV Race. A total of 283 harriers ran the 5k, with freshmen Abby Hewitt and Lauren Zumbach both placing in the top 35.
The team will take a week off before hosting the Princeton Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 17, its only home meet of the season.
