Speare Qualifies For Nationals; Men's XC Takes 6th at Regionals

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (11/14/09) - The Princeton men's cross country team finished in sixth place in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional held at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday, Nov. 14. The course had seen better days as the recent weather led to very muddy conditions and pools of water.
The Tigers earned 211 points in the 10k race, which featured 28 teams and 197 finishers.
Princeton's top runner this season, sophomore Brian Leung, suffered an injury during the race and did not finish. Leung took ninth place overall last season and was in contention for one of the top spots in today's race.
Junior captain Rob Speare ran a terrific race, finishing 12th overall, as the Tigers' first scorer with a time of 32:11.5. His finish qualifies him for the NCAA Championship.
Sophomore Donn Cabral was 14th overall with a time of 32:38.8 and may receive an at-large pick to the NCAA Championship when selections are made on Sunday, Nov. 15.
Junior Mark Amirault was the third Tiger across the line at 32:59.0 for 27th, followed by sophomore Sean Wilson at 34:02.5 for 66th place and freshman James Webb in 92nd place with a time of at 34:31.2. Sophomore Joe Stilin clocked in at 34:38.4.
The squad returns every one of its finishers next year and is optimistic for its future chances of gaining a team bid to the NCAA Championship.
In the meantime, Speare will represent the Tigers are the championship on Monday, Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Indiana. He becomes the 12th runner in program history to make the championship individually. This is the seventh straight year that Princeton has had an individual qualify to compete in the national championship.
