Women's XC Headed For Nationals After 2nd-Place Finish at Regionals

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (11/14/09) - The Princeton women's cross country team will run for the national championship after finishing second at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Saturday, Nov. 14.
The 6k race was held at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, on a course that had seen better days as the recent weather led to very muddy conditions and pools of water.
The Tigers' top-two finish automatically qualifies the team to the NCAA Championship, which will take place on Monday, Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind. This is the eighth time that Princeton has made nationals as a team, and fifth straight season the team has earn an automatic bid.
Villanova claimed the team victory earning 23 points with runners coming in first and second place. Princeton earned 77 points in the race, 11 points ahead of third-place West Virginia. Penn State and Georgetown finished fourth and fifth, respectively. A total of 27 teams competed in the race, with 190 finishers.
Senior Liz Costello clocked in at 20:53 to take seventh place in the race. Sophomore Alex Banfich followed five seconds later to claim 10th place. Junior Sarah Cummings clocked in a 21:29 for 17th place and junior Ashley Higginson was 20th with a time of 21:43. Senior Reilly Kiernan was just one second behind to take 23rd. Liz Deir and Alexa Glencer came in at 21:52 and 22:00, respectively, to finish in 26th and 28th places.
The women's national championship race will begin at 12:58 p.m., and will be aired live on VERSUS, with a live webstream available on NCAA.com
