Last time out: Princeton had its best offensive day since the season-opening win against Central Michigan in a 62-48 victory over Lafayette last Saturday. The Tigers shot 47.8 percent from the field, 52.2 percent from three-point range, and scored 62 points, all the most since the season's first game.
Last time vs. UNCG: Princeton answered UNCG's first basket with a 15-1 run and never trailed in a 65-55 win. The Tigers held UNCG to 29.6 percent shooting, the second-lowest clip of any Princeton opponent last season. Dan Mavraides (17), Douglas Davis (15) and Kareem Maddox (10) all reached double digits in scoring, while Pawel Buczak contributed on the glass with 10 rebounds. Ben Stywall led UNCG with 13 points.
What's changed: Princeton returns all 65 points from the last meeting, while UNCG returns 42 of 55 points. Daniel Oliver's 10 points represent the largest share of those not back. Among the newcomers, Princeton has added solid contributions from Ian Hummer (5.7 ppg) and Will Barrett (team-high nine steals). The Spartans' top freshman is Kyle Randall, a consistent starter who has averaged 10.7 ppg and a team-high 2.6 assists per game.
Tigers in Greensboro: Princeton men's basketball has played four times at the Greensboro Coliseum, twice against North Carolina, once against Duke and once against Davidson. On Dec. 27, 1965, Ed Hummer, Ian Hummer's father, had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead Princeton in a 75-61 loss to the Tar Heels. On Dec. 16, 1967, John Hummer, Ian's uncle, scored 17 points and grabbed nine boards to lead Princeton in a 71-63 loss to UNC. Duke won 79-73 on Dec. 1, 1970, and Davidson won 66-47 on Dec. 18, 1973.
Carolina-bound: Princeton will be looking for its first win in the state of North Carolina since Dec. 4, 1999 when the Tigers defeated the College of Charleston at the old Charlotte Coliseum. Since then, Princeton has lost three times at Duke and once at Wake Forest.
Davis from downtown: Douglas Davis was 7 for 11 from three-point range against Lafayette, setting a career best for himself and reaching a number only two Tigers can claim to have surpassed. Spencer Gloger had 10 against Alabama-Birmingham on Dec. 18, 1999, and Matt Lapin had eight against Harvard in 1990.
Rebounding bests: Dan Mavraides led Princeton with eight rebounds against Lafayette, a career best for the junior.
Ivy ties: Spartan coach Mike Dement was the head coach at Cornell from 1986-91 and an assistant coach for two seasons prior. Combining his tenure at Cornell with last season's meeting, Dement's record against Princeton is 5-10 with Princeton winning the last eight.
Keys to victory: When Pawel Buczak, Dan Mavraides and Zach Finley get involved in the scoring, Princeton's chances of winning go up. Finley's points per game average in wins is 7.7 points higher than in losses, while Mavraides' is 6.5 points higher, and Buczak's is 5.0 points better.
More keys: Princeton is shooting 48.1 percent in its victories this season and just 35 percent in its losses. From distance, the Tigers have made 48 percent of three-pointers in wins and 28.3 percent in losses. Princeton holds a plus-5 rebounding margin in victories and is being outrebounded by 11.7 boards per game in losses.
500: There is one current active member of the Princeton 500-point club, senior Zach Finley. Senior Marcus Schroeder (449) and sophomore Douglas Davis (425) are on pace to join him this season.
Soaring Saunders: Patrick Saunders is Princeton's leader in field goal percentage (19 for 32) at 59.4 percent. He has started each of the last four games and has reached double digits in scoring in three of those. Twice in the last three games, Saunders has reset his career scoring best, most recently against Lafayette (15).
Everybody boards: Nine Princeton players have double-digit rebounds this season, none more than senior guard Marcus Schroeder (28). Schroeder is also the leader in minutes (252/36.0 mpg) and assists (17).
Give and take: Two Tigers have positive assist-to-turnover ratios, Marcus Schroeder (17:10) and Will Barrett (6:4). In his 94 minutes, Barrett has accumulated a team-high nine steals.
Looking ahead: The Tigers will have two more home games before a holiday break, hosting Monmouth Wednesday and visiting Maine Sunday, Dec. 20. Monmouth (2-7) will host Penn Saturday before visiting Princeton.
