Top Female Athletes Of The Decade: No. 2 Esmeralda Negron '05
December 29, 2009 | Women's Soccer
Esmeralda Negron destroyed the soccer record books at Princeton, both for the men and the women, during her college career. Her final goal allowed Princeton to achieve something that no other Ivy League women's soccer team before or since has accomplished.
Negron scored 47 goals for Princeton, more than any other male or female ever to play for the school. Her 112 points are 18 more than any other male or female player ever has had at Princeton; her 52 points as a senior are 21 more than the next-highest total by a woman and eight more than the men's record. She holds the Ivy League record for points in a season as well.
She scored 20 goals as a senior, which is six more than any other women's player has ever had in a season, and just for good measure, she also holds the women's record for assists in a season with 12. Both of those totals tie the men's single-season record at Princeton.
She also scored four overtime goals in her career, including one to defeat Harvard her senior year to end a decade-long home losing streak to the Crimson.
She was a first-team All-America in 2004 and a third-team All-America in 2003. She was a two-time Ivy League Player of the Year and three-time first-team All-Ivy League selection. She played on the United States U21 national team that won the Nordic Cup in Iceland in 2004.
Her 47th and final goal came 5:32 into the second half of the 2004 NCAA quarterfinals against Washington to snap a 1-1 tie and lead Princeton to a 3-1 win and the only Ivy League appearance in the NCAA women's soccer Final Four.
Princeton went 19-3 her senior year to set the school record for wins and was 57-12-6 in her four years, including a 22-4-2 record in the Ivy League.
She is currently an assistant coach at Seton Hall.
