Men's Track Earns 10 of 17 First-Place Medals to Win H-Y-P

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (2/14/09) ? The Princeton men's track and field team won the annual H-Y-P meet at Gordon Track Center in Cambridge, Mass., on Saturday, Feb. 14. The Tigers recorded 83 points in the win, earning 10 of 17 first-place medals. Yale took second with 55 points and Harvard had 32.
Junior Andrew Usoro won the 200-meter dash, finishing in a time of 23.11 and senior Ian Thomson followed up with a 49.30 mark in the 400-meter dash for second place.
Senior Mike Eddy continued to excel at the 500-meter dash, winning the event for the third straight meet. His time of 1:03.58 is his best time of the season. Freshman Ricky Kearney finished in third place in the event with a 1:05.06.
Freshman Nick Thomas placed second in the 800-meter run, crossing the line at 1:56.30. In the 1000-meter run the Tigers earned both first and third places. Taking top honors was sophomore Kyle Soloff with a mark of 2:27.70. Freshman Trevor Van Ackeren followed up with 2:28.73, in his first attempt at the event.
Making his first appearance in the mile this season, senior Michael Maag covered the track in 4:05.82 to take first place. Fellow harrier, Brian Leung ran the 3,000 in 8:16.20 for second place.
Senior Chris Vasich won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.25, with sophomore Adam Thayer posting a time of 8.61 for third.
The Tigers also recorded a win in the 4x400, winning by two tenths of a second over Yale. The Bulldogs got the better of the Tigers in the 4x800 however, with Princeton settling for second place with a time of 7:50.77.
Princeton's success didn't end on the track.
Juniors Justin Frick and Ian Fox finished one-two in the high jump, with Frick earning an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 2.14 meters, while Fox reached 1.99.
Juniors Chad Faulkner and Scott Henkelman both claimed third place in the pole vault and long jump, respectively. Winning the triple jump was sophomore Garner McCloud who launched himself to 13.70 meters.
The Tigers won both throwing events and dominated the shot put, earning the first four places in the event. Taking top honors was junior Eric Plummer with a throw of 17.05 meters. Sophomore George Abyad , junior Joel Karacozoff and freshman Patrick Park all threw over 16 meters.
Senior Alex Pessala once again earned NCAA provisional qualifying standards in the weight throw with a toss of 19.90 meters. Karacozoff a career-best throw of 18.8 meters for second place.
