Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader at William & Mary

The Princeton baseball team split its two games on Saturday at William & Mary, falling 10-9 in 11 innings in the opener and winning 7-4 in a seven-inning affair in the nightcap. Juniors Jon Broscious and Brian Berkowitz each hit grand slams in the doubleheader.
Game 1
Princeton fell behind early in the opener but rallied to take a 7-6 lead in the eighth inning when junior Jon Broscious hit a grand slam. William & Mary forced extra innings with a run in the ninth and after the team's traded two runs in the 10th, the Tribe won it with a bases loaded walk in the 11th.
William & Mary jumped ahead in the game with four runs in the second inning highlighted by Stephen Arcure's two run-triple. Princeto made two errors in the inning and as a result, none of the four runs were charged as earned to Princeton junior starting pitcher David Hale.
The Tigers started to chip back in the next at bat when senior Derek Beckman doubled home freshman Andrew Whitener. It was one of two RBIs for Beckman and was the first of three hits for Whitener in his collegiate debut. William & Mary added another run in the fifth, which Princeton promptly got back in the sixth when sophomore Greg Van Horn led off the inning with a home run. It was Van Horn's second homer is as many games.
Princeton moved within three runs at 6-3 in the seventh inning when Whitener tripled home Broscious, and an inning later the Tigers went ahead thanks to Broscious' blast. Princeton loaded the bases on a single by Van Horn, a walk to junior Brian Berkowitz and a single by freshman Tom Boggiano.
The Tigers led going into the final at bat of the game, but Jeff Jones led off the final frame with a single and he later scored on Lanny Stanfield's double. The run knotted the game at 7-7 and forced extras for the second game in a row.
The Tigers came right back to take a lead in the 10th inning as junior Jack Murphy and Berkowitz led off with back-to-back singles. An intentional pass to Whitener leaded the bases and Princeton plated two runs as freshman Sam Mulroy walked and Beckman was hit by a pitch.
The Tribe responded in the bottom of the 10th with two runs on three doubled force an 11th inning. In the 11th, William & Mary loaded the bases with two hit batters and a walk and then plated the game-winning run when Chris Forsten drew a bases-loaded walk.
Hale pitched five innings allowed five runs that were all unearned. He surrendered four hits and struck out eight. Freshman Ryan Makis made his collegiate debut allowing two runs on three hits in four innings. Sophomore Tim Feess pitched the final 1.2 innings and surrendered three runs in absorbing the loss.
Game 2
Junior Brian Berkowitz hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to snap a 2-2 tie and help lift the Tigers to a 7-4 win over William & Mary in the seven-inning nightcap. Senior Brad Gemberling scattered three runs over six innings for the win.
Princeton went ahead 2-0 with a pair of runs in the second inning. Senior Adrian Turnham led off the inning with a homer and junior Jon Broscious, who reached on a single, later scored on a groundout. William & Mary draw even at 2-2 in the third inning when two runs scored on a wild pitch.
The score remained even until the fifth inning when the Tigers plated four runs on the Berkowitz grand slam. Senior Dan DeGeorge hit a lead-off single, which was followed by walks to junior Jack Murphy and David Hale. William & Mary then made a pitching change, but Berkowitz gave the new pitcher a rude welcome when he belted the fourth pitch hew saw over the centerfield wall.
Hale doubled in Princeton's seventh run in the sixth inning, while William & Mary moved within three runs with a run in their final at-bat.
Gemberling picked up the win with six solid innings. He allowed three runs on five hits and fanned six batters. Sophomore Chad Ohlendorf allowed an unearned run in the final inning.

Princeton is now 2-2 overall following the day's split. The Tigers conclude their four-game set at William & Mary tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
