Open Women Sweep Metro Cup, Will Hope For Similar Future Success On Cooper River
May 02, 2009 | Women's Rowing - Open
The Princeton open women will see Cooper River two more times this spring, and they will hope for similar success. The sixth-ranked Tigers swept a field of regional opponents, including a tough Bucknell squad, to win the 2009 Metro Cup.
Princeton won the varsity eight grand final in a time of 6:29.98, while Bucknell, Princeton's biggest challenger for a regional bid to the NCAA championships, placed second in 6:42.51. Rhode Island finished third in 6:46.74.
It was a highly successful day for the entire Princeton squad. The Tiger 2V won its grand final in 6:53.52, which topped Bucknell by more than eight seconds. Princeton also got a better than four-second victory in the varsity four with a time of 7:39.26.
Princeton will return to Cooper River in two weeks for the EAWRC Championships, where the Eastern and Ivy League titles will be decided. The Tigers will likely go in as the second-seeded Ivy League team, behind reigning national champion Yale.
