Women's Track Begins NCAA Regionals on Friday

PRINCETON, N.J. (5/27/09) ? The NCAA East Regional will be held May 29-30 at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C. Eight members of the Princeton women's track and field team have qualified for the Regional and will look to make an impressive showing to reach the NCAA Championship.
The top five finishers in each individual event automatically advance to the NCAA Championship June 10-13 at the Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark. The remainder of the competitors will be placed in an at-large pool to fill the remaining spots at the national meet.
The events begin for the Tigers on Friday at 4:35 p.m., with the 1500-meter run. Junior Liz Costello and sophomore Ashley Higginson are two of the 47 who have declared for the event. Costello is 25th on the list with a time of 4:23.75 and Higginson is 34th with a time of 4:26.37. The finals will be held on Saturday at 5:20 p.m.
Senior Agatha Offorjebe will compete in one of her two events at 6:10 p.m., the 400-meter dash. She posted a season-best time of 54.38 to ranked 20th of 32. The finals will be held Saturday at 6:05 p.m. The 200 will be held at 8:40 p.m., with 34 sprinters taking part. She qualified as the Ivy League Champion, winning the event in a time of 24.09 at Heps. The finals will be at 7 p.m., on Saturday.
Four Tigers will run in the 5000 at 9:10 p.m., the final event of the day, which features 56 runners. Freshman Alex Banfich has the best time of the bunch to rank 11th at 16:23.64. Junior Reilly Kiernan isn't far behind at 16th with a time of 16:31.54. Higginson has a time of 16:37.76 for 28th and sophomore Sarah Cummings has a time of 16:44.10 for 41st.
Sophomore Emma Ruggiero will kick off the events on Saturday with the hammer throw at 11 a.m. Her best throw of the year was 54.63 meters which ranks her 18th out of 24 competitors.
Classmate Thanithia Billings takes on the shot put at 3 p.m. Her best throw this season reached 14.41, which ranks her 29th out of the 36 declared.
Higginson and Kiernan will finish out the meet with the steeplechase at 7:45 p.m. A total of 51 athletes have declared in the event. Higginson is 11th with a time of 10:24.98, while Kiernan is 23rd at 10:38.75
