Six Princeton Field Hockey Players Competing at National Championships
June 24, 2009 | Field Hockey
Six Princeton field hockey players, five current and one alum, are vying to win the USA Field Hockey Women's National Championship this week as a number of Tigers are representing three of the six regional High Performance Centers that comprise USA Field Hockey.
Princeton alum Maren Ford '06 is playing for the Midwest team, while current Tiger sophomores Katie Reinprecht and Kathleen Sharkey and incoming freshmen Michelle Cesan and Julia Reinprecht are playing for the New Jersey team. Tiger senior Kaitlyn Perrelle is on the Pennsylvania/California team. Princeton head coach Kristen Holmes-Winn coaches the New Jersey team.
The event kicked off on Saturday with the New Jersey team topping the Pennsylvania/California team 1-0 on a Julia Reinprecht goal. Sharkey scored two goals on Sunday and Julia Reinprecht added one in an NJ 4-2 win over the South team. The New Jersey team is currently 3-0, the Midwest team in 1-2 and the PA/CA team is 0-2-1.
The USA Field Hockey Women's National Championship is a round-robin tournament from June 20-27. In the spring, High Performance Centers serving the New England, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Midwest, South and California regions conducted open trials for college-age and older athletes. Once selected to a High Performance Center, athletes received elite-level training from some of the nation's top coaches over the course of the spring.
At the conclusion of the program, each High Performance Center selected a team to represent its region at the National Championships. Athletes competing in the tournament have the opportunity for selection to the U.S. National Squad. Rosters at the Championship include current U.S. National Team stars as well as recent college All-America selections.
The Pennsylvania/California HPC is the defending champion after defeating the Midwest in last year's championship final.
