Holmes-Winn and Four Tigers Lead NJ Team to USAFH National Championship
June 28, 2009 | Field Hockey
The U.S. Field Hockey National Championships concluded Saturday in Virginia Beach with the New Jersey team, which included four of the six Princeton players in the tournament and was coached by Princeton's Kristen Holmes-Winn, winning the tournament with a 4-0-1 record and a 4-1 win over the South team in the title game.
Returning Princeton sophomores Katie Reinprecht and Kathleen Sharkey, along with incoming freshmen Julia Reinprecht and Michelle Cesan, played on the New Jersey squad. Princeton alum Maren Ford '06 was on the Midwest team, which placed fourth and while rising Tiger senior Kaitlyn Perrelle was on the fifth-place finishing Pennsylvania/California squad. Katie Reinprecht was named the Young Player of the Tournament
In the championship game, Julia Reinprecht had the first goal and Cesan had the second, a backhand scorcher that completely changed the complexion of the game and put Princeton in a good position to win in the 4-1 triumph.
At the conclusion of the event, USA Field Hockey today announced the 24-member roster for the 2009-10 Women's National Team and the sixteen members of the 2009-2010 Women's Developmental Team.
Katie Reinprecht and Ford were named to the national team, while Julia Reinprecht was named to the developmental squad. The first international competition for the Women's National Team is a visit from 2008 Olympic bronze medalists Argentina, which will take place at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., for a five-game test series in November.
Additionally, Sharkey, Katie and Julia Reinprecht, Cesan and Perrelle all were named to the U21 National Squad again. From the initial 24-member squad, 18 will be chosen for the Junior World Cup, which takes place in Boston this August.
