Men's Water Polo Hosts Hopkins in League Opener; ECACs to Follow
September 18, 2009 | Men's Water Polo
Princeton began the season last weekend with a win and three losses in the season-opening Princeton Invitational. After a loss against fourth-ranked UCLA, Princeton bounced back by doubling-up Harvard 16-8. The Tigers had two more tough games on the slate for the weekend and suffered a pair of one-goal defeats at the hands of 12th-ranked Santa Clara and 16th-ranked Brown.
Seniors Douglas Wigley and Mark Zalewski led the Tigers over the weekend as each scored five goals and added two assists. Seniors Gregor Horstmeyer and Matt Hudnall, along with junior Tommy Parolin, added four goals each as 11 different players tallied goals over the course of the weekend. Senior Eric Vreeland's six assists led the team and junior Matt Hale's seven steals was also a team high.
Princeton opens the weekend on Friday night with its CWPA Southern Division season opener against Johns Hopkins at 6:30 p.m. Both teams are currently tied for 20th in the latest national poll. The Blue Jays are 3-4 this season with all three wins coming at last weekend's Princeton Invitational. Johns Hopkins topped Iona, MIT and Fordham and fell to UCLA.
Immediately following the game, the 2009 ECAC Championships will get underway at DeNunzio Pool. The 10-team field features all five Southern Division teams and five teams from the Northern Division. Princeton's first ECAC game will be on Saturday morning against the winner of Friday night's game between Fordham and Connecticut College.
