Volleyball Rally Falls Just Short In 3-2 Loss To Duquesne
September 20, 2009 | Women's Volleyball
Despite its rough start, the Princeton women's volleyball team has showed plenty of resilience. The latest example came Sunday in the finale of the West Virginia Classic, as the Tigers rallied from an 0-2 deficit against Duquesne. Despite 20 kills from Cathryn Quinn and 52 assists from Molly Bagshaw, Princeton fell 15-11 in the final set.
Quinn led Princeton with 20 kills and a .300 attack percentage, while outsides Sheena Donohue and Lydia Rudnick combined for 27 kills and 40 digs. Rudnick, who has continued the strong start to her freshman year, had 17 kills, while Donohue led the team with 26 digs. Bagshaw recorded 52 assists and 11 digs, while junior middle Elizabeth McStravick recorded seven kills and four blocks.
After the Dukes picked up wins of 25-20 and 25-15 in the first two games, Princeton battled through a tight third set and fought off one match ball on a Rudnick kill. A second straight kill by the Princeton freshman gave the Tigers the advantage as both teams pushed for a two-point advantage. Leading 26-25, Rudnick and McStravick blocked Ashley Buse to give Princeton the set.
Duquesne jumped out to a 7-2 edge in the fourth, but it was all Princeton from there. The Tigers won 23 of the next 35 points to win the set and force a fifth, but Duquesne had the late run that counted to clinch the match.
Princeton will play its final non-league match next Saturday when it hosts Juniata at 2 p.m.
