Volleyball Breaks Drought, Enters Into Ivy Season With 3-1 Home Victory Over Juniata
September 26, 2009 | Women's Volleyball
The Princeton women's volleyball team need some home cooking to break any negative momentum from a six-match losing streak, and it got that Saturday afternoon against Division III power Juniata. The Tigers claimed a 3-1 win and will head into next Saturday's Ivy League opener against Penn with some positive momentum.
As it did in its other home victory of the season, a 3-1 win over Seton Hall, Princeton split the first two sets before taking control in the third. After winning the opener 25-19 and falling by the same score in the second set, the Tigers pulled out a tight 25-23 win in the third. That would push the home team to a 25-20 win in the fourth set and its second win of the season.
Outsides Sheena Donohue and Lydia Rudnick once again provided double-doubles for the Tigers. Donohue, a two-time All-Ivy selection, recorded 14 kills and 18 digs, while Rudnick, a freshman, recorded 17 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Michaela Venuti paced the offense with 45 assists, while classmate Cathryn Quinn recorded 17 kills and five blocks. Senior Torri Patel added fifteen digs.
Princeton is now finished with the non-Ivy portion of the schedule and will play the next 14 matches for a shot at its 15th Ivy League title. The journey starts Saturday at 7 p.m. against Penn, a rivalry which has turned into one of the best in the Ivy League.
