Rutgers Holds Off Women's Soccer, 2-0
September 21, 2009 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON -- Despite winning the battle in shots, the Princeton women's soccer team lost the statistic that counts as Rutgers defeated the Tigers 2-0 Sunday night on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
Princeton outshot Rutgers 12-10 for the game, including an 8-5 advantage in the second half as the Tigers looked for the tying goal. Instead, it was Rutgers that came through after the break, with Ashley Jones scoring her second goal of the game to pad the Scarlet Knight lead.
Rutgers improved to 7-1-1 on the season, adding a win to a young campaign that had the Scarlet Knights at No. 16 in the NSCAA poll heading into the weekend.
"We did have a great second half," Princeton senior co-captain Melissa Seitz said. "Unfortunately, that second goal kind
of put us back on our heels. Otherwise, I really think we could have
gotten that tying goal."
Princeton coach Julie Shackford also lamented Rutgers doubling its lead and redirecting the flow of the game.
"I think we had momentum in the second half. It was an unfortunate giveaway they capitalized on, and once you give up the second goal, it's tough," Shackford said.
Both Rutgers goals came when Jones got behind the Princeton defense and had a pair of wide-open shots at the net. Jones' first score came 18 minutes into the game, while the insurance goal came with 25 minutes left.
The loss dropped Princeton to 1-4-1 on the season as the Tigers enter their final pre-Ivy match Wednesday against Hartford at Roberts Stadium.
