Trio of Tigers Scores as Women's Soccer Tops Hartford 3-0 ? Video Included

PRINCETON – Just in time, or so they hope, the Princeton women's soccer team found some offense.
Goals by Jen Hoy, Marci Pasenello and Rachel Saunders lifted the Tigers to a 3-0 win over Hartford Wednesday night at Roberts Stadium in what was Princeton's final tune-up before Ivy League play begins Saturday against Yale.
“I think we definitely needed it,” said Princeton coach Julie Shackford, who recorded her 197th career win as a collegiate head coach. “We've played well in games for long stretches and haven't rewarded ourselves (with wins).”
Princeton (2-4-1) continued a trend this season by outshooting the Hawks 20-6, but for only the second time this season did a win in the shots category translate to a victory. The Tigers have outshot or equaled the number of shots of its opponent in every game this season.
The shutout was the first for Princeton goalkeeper Alyssa Pont since Nov. 1, 2008, a 4-0 win at Cornell. That game was also the last time Princeton scored at least three goals and also the last time it had at least 20 shots. The Tigers tallied 11 corner kicks to Hartford's two.
Once again, Princeton's underclassmen played a big role in the team's offense. Seven of the nine points Princeton scored against Hartford (3-5-1) were by freshmen or sophomores, as have 17 of the team's 21 points on the season.
Princeton carried a 2-0 lead into the halftime break after Hoy's and Pasenello's goals less than five minutes apart, the latter coming 28:28 into the game. Saunders added to the lead less than four minutes into the second half.
Yale will make its first visit to the year-old Roberts Stadium Saturday at 5 p.m.
